Understanding Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) in Autism

PDA is more than just “being difficult” or “avoidant.” It is an anxiety-driven profile where the brain perceives demands—even simple, everyday ones—as a threat to personal autonomy and safety.

When someone with a PDA profile encounters a demand, their nervous system may immediately flip into a survival state (fight, flight, or freeze). This is why traditional “consequence-based” parenting or teaching often backfires; it increases the threat level rather than reducing the anxiety.
